SUMMARY:Training on Business Development for Small-Scale Mining
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][uncode_custom_fields post_type=”tribe_venue” field_elements=”value”][vc_column_text]In October 2024\, the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme conducted a training in Brazzaville for artisanal and small-scale miners. The training aimed to strengthen participants’ entrepreneurial and management skills\, introduce business planning as a practical decision-making tool\, and promote more inclusive and sustainable mining practices.  \nParticipants take part in a training on business development and business planning\nThe workshop provided participants with knowledge on key aspects of managing and developing small-scale mining enterprises. Sessions addressed topics such as business planning\, access to finance\, marketing strategies\, the creation and management of business entities and cooperatives\, as well as basic accounting principles necessary for running a mining-related business.  \nThe training was supported by practical case studies and interactive discussions that encouraged peer learning and the exchange of experiences among participants. These exchanges helped identify practical solutions and led to recommendations for improving the management and performance of small-scale mining enterprises.  \nAs a result\, participants gained practical knowledge and skills to better organize\, formalize\, and sustain their mining activities. This contributes to improving the productivity and income-generating potential of artisanal and small-scale mining businesses.  \n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

By learning from Tanzania’s experiences\, Uganda aims to strengthen its own mining sector and unlock its natural resource potential.  \nThe mission showcased Tanzania’s significant progress in the mineral sector\, with key speakers sharing Tanzania’s experiences in exploration\, value addition\, and private sector engagement. Experts shared detailed advancements in geological research\, and outlined initiatives supporting small-scale miners\, value addition\, and sustainable energy. They also emphasized the crucial role of transparency and data-driven governance in the extractive industries\, underscoring Tanzania’s commitment to responsible resource management. \nThe Uganda delegation learnt about best practices in Tanzania on:  \n\nTechnological advancements: Digitalization of mining regulations and estimation of mineral resources which involves leveraging digital tools to regulate mining activities and track them in real time.\nEmpowering small-scale miners who contribute 40% of Tanzania’s mining output\nGovernance and transparency: Insights into Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TEITI) data-driven governance\nGeological information: Geological Survey of Tanzania’s systematic mineral sample analysis hailed as a benchmark for Uganda’s Geological Survey.\n\nThis collaboration and knowledge sharing between Tanzania and Uganda reinforces the potential of regional partnerships to unlock Africa’s natural resources for shared prosperity. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The workshop participants learned how to produce eco-materials—compressed stabilized earth bricks.  \nOrganized by the Programme in partnership with the University of Dschang and the Institute of Fine Arts in Foumban\, the workshop trained 50 young men and women in using Development Minerals in sustainable building practices. The training included theoretical sessions at the University of Dschang and practical activities at a pilot site\, covering topics such as environmental safety in mining\, compressed earth bricks production\, eco-material techniques\, and entrepreneurship. A qualified team of experts\, led by Dr. Moussa Charlot\, provided instruction\, contributing to the implementation of a continuing education programme in Development Minerals in Cameroon.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
