Geoscience Information in Africa Workshop (GIRAF 2015)

Fourteen geoscientists from Africa were supported to attend the GIRAF 2015 Workshop in Maputo, 6–9 of October, 2015. GIRAF is a pan-African geoscience information knowledge network of geological surveys, universities and companies. Established in 2006 the network hosts bi-annual capacity building workshops for south-to-south knowledge exchange. Around 90 participants attended the workshop, representing the key geological institutions and geological surveys in Africa. The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme partnered with BGR (the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources in Germany) to hold this event. Two technical sessions were held on Development Minerals where the 14 sponsored participants presented papers and led a discussion amongst all attendees. The German Ambassador to Mozambique, Dr. Philipp Schauer opened the event, along with Adriano Senvano, Director of the National Institute of Mines, Mozambique. The UNDP Programme Manager, Dr Daniel Franks gave a welcome speech outlining the programme as part of the opening ceremony.
