The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme celebrated EU Raw Materials Week 2016 with an event to showcase the results of the Programme's training and capacity building with SMEs, governments, civil society and other stakeholders in 40 countries of the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States. The event aimed to demonstrate how local minerals and materials such as sand, salt, marble and gravel can spur inclusive and sustainable development.

The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme co-hosted a half day workshop at CAG26 with the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre to discuss the link between Development Minerals and ASM in Africa with presentations on topics such as agro-minerals, industrial clay, marble and other construction materials.

On the 18-20 October 2016, the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme held a National Consultation Workshop in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Cameroon is one of the six focus countries of the programme and the purpose of the workshop was to discuss the state of the quarry and small-scale mining sectors in the country, to consult on the activities that will be implemented as part of the programme and to begin to develop a roadmap and activity work plan.

Twenty-one African policy makers, academics and development practitioners came together at the headquarters of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, October 17-20 to draft model legislation for the quarrying and small-scale mining of 'Development Minerals' and to develop a multi-authored edited book about Development Minerals in Africa. The participants represented Algeria, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The Central African Regional Training Workshop on Environment, Community, Health and Safety took place from 20 – 23 September, 2016 in Brazzaville, Congo. The event brought together 40 participants from Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Madagascar and the Republic of Congo. The event was held in association with the Economic Community for Central African States (ECCAS), the Ministry of Mines and Geology of the Republic of Congo, the African Union Commission and the African Minerals Development Centre.

The Caribbean Regional Training Workshop on Environment, Community, Health and Safety took place from 18 – 21 April in Georgetown, Guyana bringing together 43 participants from the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. The event was held in association with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Guyana.

The West Africa Regional Training Workshop on Environment, Community, Health and Safety was held in Accra, Ghana, 15-18 March, 2016. Participants represented Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. The event was held in association with the Africa Union Commission, ECOWAS Commission, the Minerals Commission of Ghana and the African Minerals Development Centre.

The Pacific Regional Training Workshop on Environment, Community, Health and Safety was held in Suva, on 1-4 December, 2015. The event was opened by Hon. Mereseini Vuniwaqa, Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Fiji; Amb. Andrew Jacobs, Head of the EU Delegation to the Pacific; and Ms. Osnat Lubrani, UNDP Resident Representative Fiji.

The East Africa Regional Training Workshop on Environment, Community, Health and Safety was held in Addis Ababa, 9-12 November. Participants represented Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda. The event was held in association with the Africa Union Commission and the African Minerals Development Centre at the African Union Commission conference facilities in Addis Ababa.

Twelve women small scale miners working in Development Minerals were supported to attend the Regional Sharefair on Gender Equality in the Extractives Industry, Nairobi on the 13-15 October 2015. UN Women in collaboration with key partners (including the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme) brought together governments, small-scale miners, civil society, and the private sector to participate in the event.

Fourteen geoscientists from Africa were supported to attend the GIRAF 2015 Workshop in Maputo, 6–9 of October, 2015. GIRAF is a pan-African geoscience information knowledge network of geological surveys, universities and companies. Established in 2006 the network hosts bi-annual capacity building workshops for south-to-south knowledge exchange.

The Inception Workshop held in Brussels on the 15th and 16th of July was attended by a diverse group of more than 70 stakeholders, including representatives of 21 ACP countries, international organizations, bilateral partners, mining associations, small-scale miners, chambers of mines, regional and specialist institutions as well as civil society organizations active in the neglected Development Minerals sector.
