Fiji - Brochure
This brochure summarizes the work of the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme in Fiji, focusing on enhancing disaster and climate resilience through sustainable mineral resource management. It details efforts to support artisans, strengthen industry regulations and data, and foster low-carbon construction practices, such as the "Blue Concrete Initiative". The Programme also emphasizes capacity building, community support, and partnerships to ensure long-term environmental integrity and economic development in Fiji's crucial Development Minerals sector.
Baseline Assessment of Development Minerals in Fiji
This is a report of a comprehensive study of Fiji's locally sourced mineral sector, such as sand, gravel, and crushed aggregate. Conducted by the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme, it's the first holistic assessment of the sector, crucial for Fiji's infrastructure, housing, and disaster reconstruction. The study revealed the sector's significant economic contribution, estimated at FJ$190.3M-FJ$369.1M in 2017, far exceeding official statistics. It also identified outdated legal frameworks, significant environmental and social impacts from river gravel extraction, and opportunities for new mineral industries and sustainable community development through hard rock quarrying. This assessment provides the knowledge base for future interventions and sustainable development strategies in Fiji's Development Minerals sector.
Building Disaster and Climate Resilience through Development Minerals
This white paper reviews the critical role of locally sourced construction materials (Development Minerals such as sand, gravel, and cement) in enhancing disaster preparedness, resilience, and recovery, particularly in the Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts.
It shows that despite the significant economic damage caused by disasters globally; existing disaster planning and recovery frameworks often overlook the crucial aspect of sourcing construction materials and largely ignore the quarry sector. It argues that Development Minerals are essential for building resilient infrastructure, facilitating post-disaster reconstruction, enabling renewable energy development, and providing post-disaster employment.
The white paper aims to support governments, development partners, and stakeholders by:
- Advancing global discourse on the role of Development Minerals in building resilience and strengthening mineral security.
- Presenting tools and frameworks for informed decision-making in the sector.
- Providing policy options and recommendations to govern the Development Minerals sector, ultimately enhancing preparedness for and recovery from disasters and climate change.
River Gravel and Sand Mining Guideline Development Report
This report presents a situational analysis of conflict within Uganda's Development Minerals sector. It details the findings of a study that examined the various forms of conflict prevalent in the sector, existing grievance handling mechanisms, and capacity gaps among stakeholders. The analysis covers conflicts among miners, between miners and other parties (like landowners or buyers), and those related to resource ownership and environmental concerns. The report also assesses the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) within the sector regarding conflict.
Baseline study on Development Minerals in Burkina Faso
This is a report of the baseline study conducted on the artisanal exploitation of Development Minerals in four regions of Burkina Faso: Hauts-Bassins, South-West, Boucle du Mouhoun, and Centre-Sud. It includes a census of key actors and assessments in selected municipalities such as Dano, Diébougou, Bobo-Dioulasso, Boromo, Toécé, and others. The study focused on materials like laterite, sand, clay, and granite, providing valuable insights into the state of artisanal exploitation while leaving room for further exploration of additional quarries and materials in the region.
