Environmental issues in artisanal mining
The Programme documented the environmental and social impacts of mining in four regions of Cameroon, raising alarm bells about the wide-ranging impacts. One of these regions is in the East region of the country, where the Congo basin forest starts. Apart from gold and gemstone mining, the mining of construction materials such as sand and clay, contributes significantly to environmental degradation. The Programme conducted trainings on health, safety and environment (HSE) and engaged artisanal miners and their communities. This shows the importance of active participation of artisanal mining communities and the government in finding solutions to address the impacts.
