The Central African Regional Training Workshop on Environment, Community, Health and Safety took place from 20 – 23 September, 2016 in Brazzaville, Congo. The event brought together 40 participants from Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Madagascar and the Republic of Congo. The event was held in association with the Economic Community for Central African States (ECCAS), the Ministry of Mines and Geology of the Republic of Congo, the African Union Commission and the African Minerals Development Centre.

Several high-level speakers made opening remarks including:

  • His Excellence Pierre Oba Minister of Miners and Geology, Republic of Congo
  • Ambassador Saskia De Lang, Head of Delegation, European Union, Republique of Congo
  • Mr. Frank Mugyenyi Dixon,Senior Advisor, African Union Commission
  • The Hon. Tabu Abdallah Manirakiza, Deputy Secretary General, Economic Community for Central African States
  • Mr. Mohammed Abchir, Deputy Resident Representative, UNDP Congo.

The event was hosted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Brazzaville.

The course aimed to enhance the knowledge of participants from government, business, and civil society on the Development Minerals sector specifically looking at the issues of environment, community, health and safety, quarry management and business development. The workshop was designed as a capacity building exercise drawing on south-south knowledge exchange including international knowledge input.

The workshop was delivered through interactive and adult training methodologies encompassing six modules and a field visit so as to grow the awareness and build professional expertise aimed to improve institutional capacity, governance, and management skills around relevant to the Development Minerals sector. The curricula was delivered in French with simultaneous translation available into English.

The field trip to aggregate quarries along the Congo river enhanced the critical reflection and knowledge sharing among the participants on the issues affecting the mining of Development Minerals.
